A wet horn was hanged in the well to
keep it in condition. In freezing weather conditions it was icing up too. The
horn became heavy. Then the edge of the well gave support and the horn was
laid on it. It is not true that playing above the well has an influence on
the sound of the horn. Playing the horn is a hard job! You need
to have a good lip tension (like playing the French horn) and it is necessary
that you have enough air pressure. A good player can produce 7 different
notes. The technique is comparable with that of a trumpet People are playing the horn only in
advent time. In the beginning of December the sounds are not so nice as in
the beginning of January, when the season is nearly finished: Practice makes
perfect, but it will cost at least a few years to learn playing the
midwinterhoorn!. In earlier times the farmer and his children or other people played
the horn. It was always a small group.
Midwinterhorn is never played together: it ’s impossible to tune them.
Nowadays the group will be split up in a few smaller groups each on
different positions. Then a player can “call” and another will “answer”,
the same situation as in earlier |
times when a
farmer played near his farmhouse and a neighbour answered him. The melody The notes which one can play are those
of the natural harmonic series. A player can produce six or seven notes. The
sound is a little bit melancholic. It will vary from player to player, but in
a group there is a kind of standard melody.
What to play is learned by imitation. There is no aim for a standard
tuning. It
is a solo instrument. |
