Midwinterhoorn

Creating a midwinterhoorn

A midwinterhoorn is crafted by splitting and gouging out a curved piece of timber. (mostly birch, alder, willow or poplar). A hole is drilled at the smallest end for the mouthpiece (Hap). The two halves are reunited with glue. No instrument is identical to another. There is variation in length, bore width and smoothness of the wood. That results in a different sound for each horn. Building a horn needs craftsmanship. There are some people in Twenthe who are able to build one. Some players built their own horn. It needs patience.

It needs a lot of craftsmanship to make a horn out of a piece of timber.

Shaping the horn is not an easy job.

The length is important for the amount of tones. The longer the horn, the easier you can play it. The diameter is essential for the sound. So is the smoothness of the inner part of the horn.
