In the middle of the 17th century outside the region of Twente people used to sing pastoral songs and play the horn during Christmas eve. Then there was a great audience. Later on there was a kind of contest for players to awake the churchgoers.

The thesis that playing the midwinterhorn is connected with the Christian religion is confirmed by the fact that the midwinterhorn was taken along by the pilgrims to the place of pilgrimage called Kevelaar (Germany)

It is also possible that playing the horn is nothing more than a kind of calling: giving a signal!

And of course there is the theory of dispelling the evil spirits!

Old traditions, pagan customs and the Christian religion. They all had their influence.

The connection with the Christian religion must be a strong one: The Advent is the only time for playing!
