Midwinterhoorn

Playing the horn, where does it come from?

After the 1900’s playing had become a declining tradition, but enthousiast regionalists (Jans, Borghuis, Meyling and Gast) picked it up again.

In the beginning of the fifties there was a revival. Some people could remember the “melody”. Manufacturing  a horn out of wood started again (some horns were made of tin and still in use!).

It is not quite clear what the origin of the horn is.

Everhard Jans wrote in his book about Midwinterhoorn playing:

“The oldest known source is a charter from 1485 from Sonsbeck (near Xanten in Germany)“.

Playing a horn  (e.g. one of an ox) is very old. It is mentioned in the bible. The horn used in Twente is made of wood.

More history

It is interesting that there are many stories about playing the horn. They are connected to clerical customs. In Germany, just near the boarder with Holland playing the horn during the Christmas night was forbidden, because of the fact that it was very noisy and uncivilized. It was something for weaklings or lanky youth!
