Playing the horn, where does it come
from? After the 1900’s playing had become a
declining tradition, but enthousiast regionalists (Jans, Borghuis, Meyling
and Gast) picked it up again. In the beginning of the fifties there
was a revival. Some people could remember the “melody”. Manufacturing a horn out of wood started again (some
horns were made of tin and still in use!). It is not quite clear what the origin of
the horn is. Everhard Jans wrote in his book about
Midwinterhoorn playing: “The oldest known source is a charter
from 1485 from Sonsbeck (near Xanten in Playing a horn (e.g. one of an ox) is very old. It is
mentioned in the bible. The horn used in Twente is made of wood. It is interesting that there are many stories
about playing the horn. They are connected to clerical customs. In |
