Midwinterhoorn

Every year there is a contest. The winner gets the Zulvern Hoarn. (The silver horn. It is a challenge trophy, a gift from Mr. Anton Reef from Oldenzaal in the early fifties see picture right up).

There are special rules, but the melody is free. These demonstrations began in 1953 and there has been a lot of discussion on the rules. The photo (from the newspaper Tubantia 1981) a senior player demonstrates the horn. Mind the audience. A lot of people came to the demonstrations. Mind also the water tub: for moistening the (wet) horns.

Dr. Everhard Jans wrote some books on the midwinterhorn. He describes one of the first demonstrations (1954):

…”the players took up their positions on the yard of the Lichtenberg farmhouse. Just near the well. It is a place in the neighborhood of an old mansion called Het Everloo. There were 19 players, from a hamlet called Volthe. There was only one horn made of wood, but it sounded good. (The rest of the horns were made of tin!) There was a large audience and cars were all over the place. Two coaches came from Hengelo, full of persons interested in the playing”….

The players from the old town of  Ootmarsum won the “Zulveren hoarn”. F. Tennigloo from Ootmarsum was the best individual player. Some players were disqualified:  The horns did not fit with the regulations….

You will never forget the sound….
